Historical Notes:

Sigeion was an ancient city located on the north coast of the Aegean Sea, in the region of Troas, modern-day Turkey. The city was founded in the 7th century BC by Mytilenaeans from Lesbos, and from that point, played an important role in maritime trade and commerce between the Aegean and Black Sea regions.  The city boasted a strategic location, close to the famed city of Troy, and was mentioned in Homer's Iliad.  It was known to have maintained a strong alliance with the city of Athens, and its coinage featured both Athena as well as her owl.  Sometime during the Hellenistic period, Sigeion went into decline, and by the early 1st century AD, it was noted by Strabo to have been abandoned and left in ruins.
