THEODOSIUS I, THE GREAT
AD 379-395AE4. 1.0g, 13.5mm
MINTED: Siscia mint, AD 384-387
REF: RIC IX Siscia 39 (scarce)OBVERSE: D N THEODO-SIVS P F AVG, pearl-diadmed, draped and cuirassed bust right.
REVERSE: VICTORIA AVGGG, Victory advancing left holding wreath and palm; ASIS in exergue.
Notes:
Dark green patina. Well-centered obverse with an excellent portrait and full, clear legends. Nice for the type. The VICTORIA AVGGG on the reverse indicates that this was struck in the name of three co-emperors - Theodosius I, Valentinian II, and Arcadius.
Historical Notes:
Theodosius I was for a brief period (AD 393-395) the last emperor to rule over a united Roman Empire. He made Christianity the official state religion of the Roman Empire and banned the practising of pagan rituals, including the Olympic Games in Ancient Greece. After his death, the empire was divided between his young sons Arcadius and Honorius, and would never again be reunified under a single ruler.
