Historical Notes:
Though Kamarina was founded by colonists from Syracuse, its relationship with its mother city was often a troubled one. Kamarina not only repeatedly rebelled against Syracusan control, but would also ally itself with Syracuse's enemies. In 405 BC, during the Sicilian Wars, it was abandoned by its citizens and subsequently sacked and occupied by invading Carthaginian forces. Over a century later, during the first Punic War, it was seized again by the Carthaginians in 259 BC, and the year after that, by the Romans. By the time of the 1st century BC, the city had lost most of its citizens as well as its significance.
