Historical Notes:

The moneyer was the son of C. Norbanus, consul of 83 BC, who sided with Marius against Sulla during the civil war between the two and ended up commiting suicide to avoid being handed over to Sulla.

The fasces depicted on the coin was a symbol of the imperium, or power and authority, of a Roman magistrate, and was made up of a bundle of wooden rods bound with the blade of an axe, and was possibly a reference to the moneyer's father holding the office of consul that year.
