Historical Notes:

Prior to their adoption of coinage, Rome and other Italian cities employed a system of barter trade based on the exchange of weights of metal for goods and services.  From the 8th to 4th centuries BC, the Aes Rude, typically irregular ingots or chunks of copper without any design, served this purpose.  Larger Aes Rude specimens weighing as much as several kilograms have been found, though more common are smaller fragments between around 8 to 200 grams.
