Historical Notes:

After succeeding his father to the throne in 246 BC, Ptolemy III Euergetes ("the Benefactor") shrewdly united Egypt and Cyrenaica by marrying his half-cousin Berenice II, who was at the time the queen regnant of Cyrenaica.  His victory in the Third Syrian War (246–241 BC), which had been sparked by the murder of his sister in a succession conflict in the Seleukid Empire, added even more territories to Egypt's control, resulting in the kingdom reaching its zenith of wealth and military power.

At home, Ptolemy was a patron of the arts as well as a prolific builder of monuments and temples, including the majestic Temple of Horus at Edfu.  He also revived the Library of Alexandria, solidifying Egypt's intellectual legacy.  Ptolemy died in 222 BC, at around the age of 58, leaving behind a prosperous and stable kingdom.
