AE Antoninianus. 4.18g, 22.6mm

MINTED: Rome mint, AD 279

REVERSE: ADVENTVS AVG, Emperor on horseback left, raising right hand & holding a sceptre in the left, treading down a captive seated on ground to left; R-crescent-Z in exergue.

Notes:

Light surface roughness and slight bend in flan.

ADVENTVS AVG, translating to "arrival of the emperor", typically accompanies on a coin the image of the emperor on horseback, and was struck to commemorate the entrance of the emperor to the city.

Historical Notes:

Born in Sirmium (present-day Sremska Mitrovica in Serbia), Probus was a career soldier who rose to become the 47th Emperor of the Roman Empire.  He spent much of his 6-year reign putting down usurpers and campaigning against the Goths, Alamanni, Vandals and other Germanic tribes.  He successfully strengthened the Empire against its enemies, but was murdered in 282 by some of his own soldiers who were unhappy at being given the menial task of draining marshes.
