Historical Notes:

Cibyra was an ancient city located in the southwestern part of modern-day Turkey. It was originally a settlement of people descended from the Lydians.  In the 2nd century BC, it thrived under the rule of the Kingdom of Pergamon, and became famed for its horses, metalworking, and leather and textile processing.  It continued to flourish during the Roman period, and was given privileges during the rules of Tiberius, Claudius and Hadrian, who visited the city in AD 129.  However, the city also suffered a series of devastating earthquakes, and one in AD 417 left it beyond repair.  By the Middle Ages, Cibyra had been abandoned and was largely forgotten.
