After the great Colossus of Rhodes toppled over during an earthquake in 226 BC, its massive bronze remains were left lying on the ground at the harbour of Rhodes.  For centuries thereafter, the remains would themselves serve as a monument and tourist attraction, until eventually in 653 AD, they were all carted away using 900 camels by an invading Muslim army and sold for scrap.  It has been reasonably suggested by some that prior to that, the Rhodians might have continued to recycle loose smaller chunks of bronze from the fallen statue to make their tools and coins.  If that were the case, there is the possiblity that the bronze coins of Rhodes such as this one were in fact made from the same metal used to construct one of the Seven Ancient Wonders of the World!

Historical Notes:

Ancient Rhodes, located in the Aegean Sea, flourished as a powerful maritime city-state in the Hellenistic era. Founded in the 5th century BCE, it became renowned for its skilled sailors, robust economy fueled by trade, and impressive naval fleet. Rhodes' strategic location made it a crucial hub for commerce between Europe, Asia, and Africa, attracting merchants from diverse cultures. The city reached its zenith under the rule of the Ptolemaic dynasty and later the Roman Empire.  Rhodes is perhaps most famous to us now as having been the home of the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Ancient Wonders of the World, which was completed in 280 BC, and at about 33 metres high, stood as tall as the Statue of Liberty, and was the tallest statue in the ancient world.
