Historical Notes:

Ariobarzanes I was king of Cappadocia from 95-62 BC, elected to the throne by the local nobility and supported by the Romans, who at the time treated the kingdom as their protectorate.  He lost power repeatedly (to Tigranes the Great of Armenia, Ariarathes Eusebes, and Mithradates VI of Pontus), but was each time restored to the throne by the Romans.  Quite aptly, he was given the name Philoromaios, 'friend of the Romans'.  He abdicated in 62 BC and was succeeded by his son, Ariobarzanes II.
