OBVERSE: ΒΙΘΥΝΙΕΩΝ; head of young Dionysos right, wreathed with ivy; ΔΚΣ (= local year 224 from Proconsular Era beginning 282/1 BC)

REVERSE: ΕΠΙ ΓΑΙΟΥ ΠΑΠΙΡΙΟΥ ΚΑΡΒΩΝΟΣ, to left and right of Roma seated left on shields, holding Nike and sceptre; ΡΩΜΗ in exergue.

Rare issue. Porous, with breaks in patina. 

 

Historical Notes:

Bithynion, which was subequently also known as Claudiopolis and Hadriana, was a city in the region of northwest Anatolia (modern day Turkey) that was known for its cattle and cheese.  It was likely the birthplace of Antinous, the favorite of Emperor Hadrian, who first encountered the beautiful Bithynian youth when he visited the city between AD 123 and 124.  After Antionous's tragic death while accompany Hadrian in Egypt in AD 130, Bithynion struck a series of impressive medallions in his memory.
