The city of Iconium was founded in the region of Lycaonia in Asia Minor (in present day Turkey). It was mentioned in the Bible as the city where Paul the Apostle and St. Barbanas came to preach during their first missionary journey. Here they were persecuted and escaped stoning, fleeing to the city of Lystra. In AD 1084, it was conquered by the Selkuk Turks and became the capital of the Seljuk Sultanate of Rum.
