Ex Prof Dr Hildebrecht Hommel Collection (1899-1996), with the collector's old tags. Hidebrecht Hommel was a professor of Greek Philology who taught at the Eberhard-Karls-University of Tübingen from 1955. At the university, driven for his passion for ancient history and religion and the study of ancient coins, he founded a chair of numismatics. His donation of his collection of 3884 Greek coins to the university formed the basis of the reference work SNG Tübingen.
Very Fine. Attractively toned, with some iridescence. Light scuff on obverse before portrait.
This type features an unusual and interesting bust of Hercules on the obverse, and on the reverse a desultor, an acrobatic horserider who at the games of the Roman circus would ride two horses at once, showing off his dexterity by jumping from one horse to another while they galloped. The reason for the enigmatic inclusion of the rat or mouse on the reverse remains unknown at this time.
ROMAN REPUBLIC . Ti Quinctius, 112/1 BC . Denarius . Ex Hommel Collection
