Very Fine. Toned.
Historically interesting Sertorian War issue.
This denarius was likely struck at a Spainish mint, possibly a military one, under the authority of Cn Lentulus Marcellinus, quaestor of the proconsul Pompey. Pompey had landed troops in Spain to quell the revolt of Quintus Sertorius, the Roman renegade general who had rebelled against the authority of Sulla and wrested the peninsula from Roman control. This coin would have been used to pay Pompey's troops in Spain.
