OBVERSE: Diademed bust of Vardanes I left, wearing spiral torque.

REVERSE: ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΝ / ΑΡΣΑΚ[ΟΥ] ΕΥΕΡΓΕΤ[ΟΥ] / [ΔΙΚΑΙΟΥ] / ΕΠΙ[ΦΑΝΟΥΣ ΦΙΛΕΛΛΗΝΟΣ], King enthroned right, receiving palm branch from Tyche standing facing, head left, holding cornucopiae; above, year (ENT).


Very Fine. A nice, large Parthian silver. A few light scratches on obverse field.

Historical Notes:

Vardanes ruled over Parthia for five years.  During that time, he was constantly challenged by his brother, Gotarzes, who sought dethrone him.  Gotarzes ultimately managed to have Vardanes assassinated while the latter was on a hunting trip.  Gotarzes went on to rule as Gotarzes II.
