A lawyer by training, Macrinus served diligently in a variety of posts under emperor Septimius Severus, and eventually worked his way up to the position of Praetorian Prefect under Severus's successor, Caracalla. In 217, he engineered Caracalla's assassination and secured the support of the army to claim the throne for himself. However, his reign was to last just 14 months. A revolt instigated by Caracalla's influential aunt, Julia Maesa, saw Macrinus defeated at the Battle of Antioch on 8 June 218. While attempting to flee back to Rome, Macrinus was captured and put to death.
