49-44 BC

Silver Denarius. 3.98g, 18.6mm

MINTED: Military mint travelling with Caesar in Spain, late 46-early 45 BC
REF: Crawford 468/1; Sydenham 1014
OBVERSE: Head of Venus right, wearing stephane; Cupid behind shoulder.
REVERSE: Trophy of Gallic arms between two seated captives: on the left a female in attitude of dejection, on the right a bearded male with hands bound behind him; CAESAR in exergue.

Good Very Fine.  Lovely old collection toning with hints of iridescence around the head of Venus.  Bold and detailed little Cupid behind Venus's shoulder, exceptionally nice for this issue.  Reverse dies slightly worn, but devices virtually complete and the name of "CAESAR" clear and fully on-flan.

Issued by a travelling mint accompanying Caesar in Spain during his last military campaign.  The campaign would end with Caesar's triumph over the Republican forces led by Gnaeus Pompey and Titus Labienus.  The obverse of the coin shows Venus, the divine patron and mythological ancestress of Caesar's family, and the reverse celebrates his famed conquest of Gaul and subjugation of the Gallic Celts.

Ex Eucharius Collection

Historical Notes:
Julius Caesar is arguably the most famous Roman who has ever lived. His climb to the apex of political power in the waning years of Roman Republic, his reputation as one the world's most brilliant military commanders, and his love affair with Cleopatra, the Queen of Egypt, has indelibly etched his name into the annals of history. Not to be outdone by the achievements of his life, his murder on Mar 15, 44 BC by as many as 60 Roman senators, when he was at the height of his powers, was of equal if not greater historical significance. Caesar's assassination led to a bloody civil war that would result in the destruction of the 500-year old Roman Republic and the subsequent formation of one of the world's mightiest empires under his grand-nephew, Augustus, the first Roman Emperor.
