Julia Maesa, sister of the Roman empress Julia Domna, rose to prominence as grandmother of emperors Elagabalus and Severus Alexander. She engineered the restoration of the Severan dynasty after the murder of Caracalla by organizing a coup against Emperor Macrinus. When she later realized her unstable grandson Elagabalus had become a liability, she sanctioned his death and replacement with her other grandson, Alexander. Maesa died around AD 225, having lived long enough to see the initial success of her grandson Alexander's reign.
