AD 138-140

AE Dupondius. 14.92g, 27.6mm

MINTED: Rome mint, circa AD 141-160
OBVERSE: DIVA FAVSTINA, draped bust right, hair elaborately waved and coiled in bands across head and drawn up at back and piled in a round coil on top.

REVERSE: IVNO, Juno, diademed, veiled, draped, standing left, holding patera in extended right hand and long sceptre, vertical, in left hand; S-C in field.

Very Fine. Lovely jade green patina, broken in a small area on reverse edge.

Historical Notes:
Faustina I was a niece of Sabina, wife of Emperor Hadrian.   She was made empress when her husband, Antoninus Pius, ascended to the throne in AD 138, but died a mere two years later.  Grieving deeply for her, Pius had Faustina deified and struck an extensive series of coinage in her name throughout his reign.
