Justin was an Illyrian of humble peasant stock who worked his way up from a lowly position in the palace guard to eventually become a senator under Emperor Anastasius. He was almost 70 when Anastasius died childless, but his influence at court and ruthlessness were such that he was able to claim the throne against several rivals. Aided by his nephew, the future emperor Justinian, Justin would begin working towards the reincorporation of Italy (then an Ostrogothic kingdom) into the Empire. He ruled for 9 years, and in the last year of his reign, made Justinian his co-ruler.
