OBVERSE: AEL FLAC-CILLA AVG, diademed and draped bust right.
REVERSE: SALVS REI-PVBLICAE, Empress or Salus standing facing, head right, arms folded over breast; SMKΓ in exergue.

 

Grade/Notes:

Good Fine/Very Fine. Dark greenish patina with some earthen cover. Some light scratches on obverse.

A larger and scarcer AE2-sized denomination for Aelia Flaccilla.
 

Historical Notes:

Aelia Flaccilla was the first wife of the Roman emperor, Theodosius I, and the mother emperors Arcadius and Honorius.  She died in 386, seven years into Theodosius's reign, at about the age of 30.  She was a devout Nicene Christian, and while she was empress did many charitable works amongst the poor and disabled.
